Rockland Announces Registration for its New Residency for Black Artists

SEATTLE (March 15, 2024) - Rockland is pleased to announce that the application period for its new 2025 Residency for Black artists opens March 15, 2024.

About the Residency

This new residency was developed as a solution to offer Black artists their own space to commune, share, and create with each other. Through its conversations with African American artists in the Seattle Metropolitan area, Rockland has learned that Blacks artists desire a place for art making where they can come together around shared values of authenticity and mutual aid and furthering their art practice. In a space exclusively for Black artists, these artists have a greater chance of achieving their highest creative potential. They are empowered through shared experience and the opportunity to develop kinship. As a result, they are better equipped to co-create an inclusive, culture of collaboration.

The residency will run from January 31 - February 11, 2025 in Rockland Woods on the Kitsap peninsula just 1.5 hours drive west of Seattle. Selected residents will be supported by Program Manager, Negarra A. Kudumu and On-Site facilitator, Aviona Rodriguez-Brown. Rockland covers all costs of lodging and meals during the residency. Travel costs to and from the residency are the responsibility of each participant.

About the Application Process
The application period for the Black Cohort 2025 residency opens on March 15, 2024 and applications will be received through June 15, 2024. This residency is open to Black artists aged 25 years and older living and working in the United States. We do not accept students enrolled in an art degree program. We are committed to offering opportunities to dedicated artists with competitive work samples at any stage in their career. To intentionally avoid access bias, resumes are not a part of the application. Instead, we do a comprehensive review of the works submitted.

Collaborative teams of 2-3 people maximum are welcome to apply.  Due to limited space, we ask that collaborative teams share live/work space. Residents are expected to arrive on the first day and stay until the very end. Applicants will submit their applications through Rockland’s online form at this link.

About Rockland
Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as our vision, Rockland strives to provide the base layers of the pyramid to enable its residents the possibility of reaching its peak of “self-actualization”. Rockland continues to navigate and understand where our role lies in dismantling systems of oppression within the arts community. To promote equity, we have a policy of forming a Selection Committee with representatives from BIPOC and LGBTQIA communities. We ask our friends and organizations within these communities to post our Call to Artists, and we keep our residency free to provide greater access to all income levels.
